What Spanish do you need to know to travel to Spain?

So you are going to travel to Spain. You are ready to see Park Güell, ready to eat paella in some of the best restaurants in Spain— but wait, you haven’t used your Spanish since high school or perhaps you’ve never had to use Spanish in a “real-life” situation. 

You dive into the Spanish textbook you have had sitting on your shelf for a while, but realize there are way too many verb tenses, too many new words, and you feel completely overwhelmed. 

You know that it is important to use the language of the place you are traveling, but are lost as to what you actually NEED to know to travel to Spain! 

I can help you out! I studied abroad in Bilbao, Spain for my Spanish Bachelor’s Degree. I also traveled to Madrid, Barcelona, San Sebastián, and Guernica. During my time in Spain, I found myself using the same vocabulary and language over and over again. I had “scripts” that helped me to communicate with the locals. 

You don’t need to know buckets of Spanish in order to travel to Spain, but it is important to learn the useful phrases and words in Spanish that you will need to use often.
