The Spanish You Need to Know to Travel to Spain

During my study abroad program in Bilbao, Spain I truly realized what Spanish you actually need to know while traveling to Spain. While in Spain I also traveled to Madrid, Barcelona, San Sebastián, and Guernica. During my time there, I found myself using the same vocabulary and sentence structure over and over again.

What was the most common vocabulary I used?

The Basics

I used a lot of greetings with my host family, while ordering food, traveling, and shopping through the streets of Spain. I also learned some cool variations of greetings.

Also, my yellow raincoat has traveled to many places around the world with me!

Ordering Food

Ordering chocolate a la taza was my favorite thing to do. I drank one almost every day. (Which was not as bad as it may sound health wise, you walk so much in Spain that I actually lost 15 pounds!)

Anyway, ordering food has a script to it. This also includes knowing numbers in order to be able to pay with the correct amount of euros. It is also important to know the Spanish names for food that you DO and DO NOT like to eat.

Getting Around

Navigating the streets of Spain requires asking for directions–be careful as you may end up walking for miles, because again, everyone walks everywhere! Anyway, knowing how to ask for directions and knowing the answers to those questions are helpful.

This is one form of transportation, a funicular. This one is in Bilbao!

There are a few other areas of vocabulary that are important to know while traveling to Spain.

If you would like to learn the vocabulary needed to travel to Spain, I am creating a course on exactly that!

All the photos are my own. I took them while I was traveling in Spain.
