My Montessori Journey

When I was a child, I attended a Montessori school. I went to Early Childhood (ages 3-6) and Elementary 1 (ages 6-9) and Elementary 2 (ages 9-12) until fifth grade. Most Montessori schools are set up with classrooms in these age ranges, but the school I attended was different. The Elementary classrooms were combined. So, when I was in fifth grade, grades one through seven were all in the same classroom. Looking back now as an adult, it is shocking to think about a six year old and a 12 year old in the same class all year, but during the experience from a child’s point of view, it was fun and did not seem out of the ordinary at all. It allowed the older students to be leaders and helped all the students promote peace and respect throughout the classroom.

I truly enjoyed my experience as a Montessori child, but my Montessori journey did not end there. That is mainly because my dad is a Montessori teacher. He was a Montessori teacher before I was born and he was my Elementary teacher for all five years. My mom was also an assistant for a few years before becoming a special education teacher. Since my dad is a Montessori teacher, I would go to the school before I even attended. After I left the school to go to middle and high school, any day my sister and I had off from school, we went into my dad’s classroom and helped with his students.

I would even go back sometimes during college, although my dad had changed schools at that point. At the end of my college experience as a Spanish major, I thought about what I wanted to do with my life. I decided I really loved the Montessori Method, and as I had such a fun childhood experience, I could try to give that experience to other children. The summer after I graduated, I worked as an assistant with my dad during a Montessori summer school program. The school year after that I was an assistant in an Elementary 1 classroom. I made it clear that I really wanted to go to Montessori training, so the following summer I went to the training. It was a really awesome experience and for the next two years I was a Montessori teacher. One year I co taught with my dad and next year I was the lead teacher in my own Elementary 1 classroom.

Due to all this, I have been in a Montessori classroom every year of my life. I truly love the Montessori Method and Montessori schools.

I realized that I had to be the Montessori child that all teachers want their students to grow up and be: a peaceful person that is pursuing their dreams. One of my passions is language learning and I realized I could combine it with Montessori to create a 3 part method. This is how the next part of my Montessori journey began: Parts of the Language, LLC.

Update November 2021: The Montessori School I went to as a child contacted me because they needed a last minute Early Childhood/Kindergarten Teacher, so I am currently teaching there. Exciting!
