Knowledge Fair

This year (Spring 2024), I decided that instead of doing a science fair, my class is going to do a knowledge far.

What is the difference?

Last year at our science fair, I had the parents bring in trifold boards and then the students picked a topic. Some students did experiments, but most students did research about some science related topic. They did all the research in class, and then typed it up, and then put it on their boards. Then the parents came in to hear about the different projects. Since they are first, second, and third graders, they needed a lot of help and also they didn’t remember as many facts as I would have liked, and just read of the board.

This year, I am changing it to a knowledge fair, where each student will pick a topic-it could be science related or not- and then look up ten facts about the topic. They will have to memorize these ten facts. They will get take their facts and type them up to be printed in a book style. They can add or draw pictures to their book. I will laminate and make each student their own “book”, in replace of the trifold board. Then when the parents come around, the students can state some facts, and then ask if they would like to look at their book.

A book will be a lot easier to keep than having a trifold board to keep. It will also be less paper waste and they students can pick whatever topic they would like to learn about, rather than just picking a science topic.

We have not done the Knowledge Fair yet, but I am hoping it will turn out very nicely!
