The Importance of Writing in Language Learning

In language learning, there are four main areas people tend to focus on: Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking.

Today we are going to take a look at writing skills.

Writing is learning a language through writing or typing things. This includes writing a letter/message to a friend, a to-do list, a poem, a book, and much more in your target language.

Writing is an active skill which means you need to use your brain to produce the language, rather than taking it in.

Here are my tips for practicing writing skills:

  1. Keep a Journal

A journal allows you to write what is going on in your life. This is useful because you will be building up vocabulary that you can use to speak. That is very important in language learning: learning vocabulary you will actually use in your day to day life.

  2. Make Lists

This could be a shopping list, a to-do list, or anything that you need a list for. Again, this is useful vocabulary you can use in your day to day life.

  3. Send messages to language learners

Finding language exchange partners is easier than ever with the internet (it is finding the right ones that is hard). Even commenting on people’s posts in different languages is helpful. People who are learning languages are also looking for people to practice with.
