3 Part Cards

Learning a language through
reading, speaking, writing, and listening using one system.

Sounds

Learning the sounds of a language first is more productive than learning the letter names. Some languages are phonetic, but most are not. The letter names rarely ever match up with the sounds needed to make to produce a word. The alphabet is showing all the letters in the language. Each letter makes multiple sounds. That is why it is important to learn the sounds of the language first.

Symbolizing

What is symbolizing?

Symbolizing is learning grammar in a visual way. The symbols represent the parts of speech. First, it is important to learn what all the symbols mean. There are the simple 9 symbols, but each symbol could be changed into a new symbol to provide a better meaning. For example, the article symbol (small, light blue triangle) could be drawn a different way to show definite articles or indefinite articles.
How does symbolizing work?

Symbolizing works by placing a symbol over a word.

This shows multiple grammar points:

  • the adjective comes before the noun in this language (English)

  • how the verb is conjugated (third person singular)

How to use symbolizing in language learning:

  1. Have sentences to symbolize. This could come from a book, article, or anywhere there are words. You may wish to purchase symbolizing sentences here.

  2. Symbolize the words you already know in the sentence.

  3. Look up the words in a dictionary that you do not know. There you will find out what part of speech they are.

3 Part Cards

3 Part cards are a way to practice vocabulary using the four language skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

Create your own cards:

  1. Write the word and definition.

  2. Read the word and definition.

  3. Record yourself saying the word and definition.

  4. Listen to the recording or type your sentence into a translator and listen to how to computer reads your sentence.
